Almost nothing is known of Heraclitus’ life before the flood. Afterwards, the details

are anecdotal, unreliable. But a photograph exists, stippled newsprint, pointillist river

in the foreground. Wind-whipped body, bending from the waist like a reed. Tall,

some would say too. All that enhanced meat he ate as a boy, prepared without love

or seasoning!

Who knows, he is reported as musing in later life, what you get with your slice

of beef. (This is neither insignificant nor the reason for everything.)

No commentary accompanies the photograph. As always, the camera is speechless.

Above his head the Provencher bridge slumps in the middle, dragging its shallow belly

through the mud.

Consider the belated problem of synchronicity: if the bridge tumbled into the river

would different waters flow through once? Twice?

The bridge drags itself on its belly through mud as if it knows that whatever lives

lives by the destruction of its opposite. In the city a man waits. The waters cut him,

like the bridge, in half.
